Wednesday, 23nd March, 11:00-12:00
Venue: „C” Congress Centre, Session Room F6
Caroline Gilby MW and the respected Tokaj winemaker István Balassa will take a look at what makes Furmint a great grape from the perspective of an outsider and an insider, discussing its fantastic versatility across all styles from fine sparkling to amazing sweet wines; its ability to deliver high quality and, increasingly, to offer a real sense of place seen through the development of single vineyard wines.

Dr Caroline Gilby MW is a widely published wine writer, award-winning author and consultant specialising in the wines of Central and Eastern Europe. She is regional chair covering Hungary at Decanter World Wine Awards and in 2018 she became the first foreigner to be awarded the title of „Friend of Hungarian Winemakers”. She is also a member of the Confrérie de Tokaj.

Through his work the Tokaj winemaker, István Balassa is exploring the wine region’s unique terroirs and he presents the results of his research into even smaller units than vineyards, i.e. parcels in the form of dry Furmints and Szamorodnis.
